The following Rules relative to the Green Grove Cemetery have been revised and adopted
by the Directors in April 2023 with a desire to enhance the beauty of the cemetery and
to better protect visitors to the cemetery as well as property within the cemetery.
1. All burial lots are leased by the Green Grove Cemetery Association with the understanding the lessee will abide by Rules and Regulations of the Green Grove Cemetery Association. All burials require a cement vault or cement liner.​
1a.The Green Grove Cemetery shall be open to visitors at all reasonable hours during the spring, summer and fall months. Ordinarily the Green Grove Cemetery will be closed during the winter months. Furthermore, the superintendent is authorized to close the Green Grove Cemetery at any time he believes such closing is necessary or desirable.
2. VEHICLES: Motor vehicles, duly registered, may be operated over the roadways of Green Grove Cemetery by visitors or business invitees, duly licensed to operate such vehicles, provided that such vehicles are operated in a safe and careful manner and at a rate of speed consistent with the traffic within the cemetery, but not in excess of twenty miles per hour. The right to operate motorcycles, snowmobiles, and bicycles is forbidden unless special written permission is received from the superintendent to do so, and such permission shall be limited to specific occasions.
3. FIREARMS: The use of, or the possession of, firearms within the Green Grove Cemetery is prohibited. The superintendent, however, is authorized to give special-permission to named individuals to possess or use firearms in Green Grove Cemetery relative to a military funeral or Memorial Day exercises.
4. CHILDREN: A child or children within the cemetery grounds must be accompanied by an adult responsible for the behavior of such child or children.
5. ANIMALS: Any animal brought into Green Grove Cemetery must be leashed or otherwise restrained.
6. NOTICE: All lots are allowed flowers three days before Memorial Day and must be removed no later than three days after Memorial Day.
6a. FLOWERS, PLANTS AND SHRUBS: The planüng and including the heights of shrubs, plants or trees must have the approval and permission of the superintendent. The Cemetery Association encourages the use of flowers throughout the summer season, but requests those placing flowers in the cemetery to please remove them before they become wilted or unatfractive to the lot. The use of suitable urns or other appropriate plant containers is permitted. After Memorial Day one plant or container is allowed to be placed near the cenfral monument on the lot. The superintendent shall have the right to enter upon any lot and remove there-from grass, leaves, branches, undesirable flowers or plants, and any improper or offensive objects. Artificial flowers may be used but must be in a suitable container or vase.
7. DAMAGED PROPERTY: The Green Grove Cemetery, its superintendent, officers or agents shall not be held responsible for damage to any lot, marker, monument, post or curbing, nor the planting on any lot; neither shall they be responsible for any urns, containers, or other articles placed upon a lot in the cemetery.
7a. DAMAGED PROPERTY: The Green Grove Cemetery, through its officers and agents will use reasonable care to avoid damage to any lot or appurtenances thereof; however, neither the Cemetery Association, nor its officers or agents shall be held responsible for damage to any lot or appurtenance thereto caused by snowplows or workmen during such periods as snow is on the ground.
NOTE: The Laws of the State of New Hampshire (R.S.A. Ch. 572) provide penalties for wrongfully destroying, injuring, defacing, or removing any Tomb, Monument, Stone or other Structure, including trees, shrubs or plants; Penalties are also provided if such acts include a fence, railing, or curbing; other penalties are provided for the wrongful removal of decorations from a grave as well as for any act tending to desecrate a grave.
8. FENCING & GRASS: Erection and/or maintenance of fencing or other enclosures around a lot, or any part thereof is prohibited. Corner posts are permitted but must be kept flush with the ground with no raised letters. All lots shall be covered with suitable grass. No other objects or covering shall be placed on any lot except as otherwise provided herein or by written permission of the superintendent.
9. ROADS: All roads within the cemetery are under the direct control and supervision of the superintendent. Trucks are permitted within the cemetery only by special written permission of the superintendent who shall designate the vehicle's route within the cemetery.
10. WORKMEN: All workmen performing any work within Green Grove Cemetery shall be subject to the direction of the superintendent.
11. MONUMENTS: Monuments or other authorized memorials shall be set upon a cement foundation. Each ten-grave lot may have one monument of a height forty (40) inches or less, and the base of the monument no longer than one half of the width of that lot. On single graves there shall be no monuments erected or maintained.
12. MARKERS: All grave markers must be set at grass level with no raised lettering excepting that existing markers may be replaced by duplicates, provided the replacements are set on a cement foundation. Grass level markers may be set without a foundation.
13. FOUNDATIONS: Foundations for monuments and/or markers shall be installed only by the Cemetery Association under the direction and authority of the superintendent in accordance with a rate schedule approved by the directors. Foundations will be installed by the cemetery at such times during the year as is feasible. Anyone déSiring a foundätlon ms alléd%r a specific memorläöfifiäiker arrangements, including a written order for said foundation, by May 10 for erection by Memorial Day. Foundations will be installed only after any and all charges relative to that specific lot have been paid.
14. PURCHASE OF LOTS & GRAVES: Cemetery lots may be purchased from the Superintendent or Secretary-Treasurer of Green Grove Cemetery in accordance with a price schedule adopted by the Board of Directors. A maximum of two cremation burials are allowed in a full lot (4' x I(Y). All lots and graves are now sold with Perpetual Care which is included in the purchase price of the lot. At which time corner stones are to be installed, it will be at the Lessee's expense. All lots and graves will only be sold to Ashland residents or former residents at the discretion of sexton.
15. TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP: The Lessee of the Lot is designated by the name on the front of the lease. The Lessee may transfer their interest in a lot or lots by endorsing the back of the Lease certificate and returning the certificate to the Secretary of Green Grove Cemetery. The Secretary shall record the change in the cemetery records and properly issue a new certificate. The cemetery records shall be the official record of ownership of cemetery lots. Existing lot sizes shall not be affected by any transfer of ownership. The Lessee does not have the right to sell the lot or individual graves.
16. Perpetual and Annual Care lots include the mowing and trimming of grass, removing old flowers, fallen leaves, free branches or other debris, care of roads, water lines, fences, equipment and tool house.
16a. Regular care does include special care of monuments, fertilizing the grass, or the planting of plants, shrubbery or trees. Lots are to be watered by cemetery employees only; watering lots by attaching sprinklers to existing water spigots is prohibited.
16b. Work on lots with Perpetual Care will be terminated at such time yearly as the interest received has been expended.
17. LOT GRADE: All lots re-seeded or re-made will be at such grade level as the superintendent may determine. The grade will be level with no grave mounds permitted.
18. RE-SEEDING: Re-seeding or re-turfing of lots is done under the direction of the superintendent. The charge for re-seeding or re-turfing is based on the size of the lot and is in accordance with a charge set by the Board of Directors.
19. OPENING GRAVES: Graves must be opened under the direction of the superintendent and by workmen in the employment of Green Grove Cemetery, at a charge fixed by the Board of Directors. The cemetery will be closed from November 1 to April 1 (weather permitting). There will be no burials done during these winter months.
20. INTERMENT: Bodies of deceased humans only may be buried in Green Grove Cemetery.
21. DISINTERMENT: The disinterment and/or removal of a body will be permitted only after written permission has been filed with the superintendent, by the lot owner and the surviving spouse; if there be no surviving spouse then a duly appointed executor or adminisfrator, if any, and if not then by the next of kin, and if full compliance has been made with all laws governing the disinterment and/or removal of a body. This rule shall not apply where a lawful order is given to the superintendent by a duly authorized public official.
22. TOMB: Bodies of deceased human beings only may be placed in the cemetery Tomb, or Receiving Vault, to await a spring burial. Such bodies must be removed as soon as possible in the spring, and no such body may remain in the Tomb, or Receiving Vault after June 15.
23. Perpetual Care should be put on all old lots so that they too will be cared for.
24. VIOLATION OF RULES: Any person willfully violating any of these rules will be ejected and excluded from the Green Grove Cemetery. Such further action may be taken as the superintendent or directors deem advisable.
A copy of these Rules and of any changes that may be made shall be posted in a
conspicuous place in the office building in Green Grove Cemetery.
